An Compassion of Strangers: The Way a Person I Only Just Encountered Helped Me Land the Position That Altered My Path

In the closing decade of the 80s, I was beginning a backpacking trip to the European continent with a friend. Because my travel mate was interested in starting a postgraduate program in NYC, we had arranged a 14-day stopover there on the way to London.

We got to the postgrad residence, a sizeable multi-story edifice on the UWS named International House. After dropping our bags, we headed straight to the cafeteria, where we got some food, sat down, and started talking to people eating there.

Adjacent to my seat was an Iraqi man studying engineering at an Ivy League institution. He inquired what I did, and I told him that I had recently completed my studies with a science degree and had been performing experiments with electron microscopy.

He pointed out that there was an microscopy facility at the university – adjacent to the engineering department, which was why he was aware of it. He suggested that I consider applying for a role with them. I laughed it off, saying that I was heading off to Europe and, more critically, I did not possess a US visa.

The next day I ventured out, coming back to the dining hall that night. The man from Iraq walked over to me and told me that he had organized a discussion for me with the leader of the research team at Columbia. Given that he had gone to the trouble, I showed up for the discussion – but right away told my interviewer that I lacked the necessary visa, so I was unable to accept the role.

As is common in NYC – a city where opportunities abound – she responded: “We can make that happen. What's your start date?” I didn't board the aircraft to London.

I was employed there for 36 months. A perk of the job was that I got no-cost classes at Columbia, and I seized the chance to earn a master’s of international affairs.

I never saw that student again and I am unaware of his name, but his incredible act of kindness altered my destiny in numerous aspects. I lacked the bravery or nerve to approach someone at an prestigious college and ask for a job. Additionally, I had long dreamed to pursue education overseas, but lacked the financial means without that free tuition.

Perhaps most importantly, that job in New York led me to a position in Switzerland where I encountered my wonderful partner, with whom I am raising four amazing children. That encounter altered everything. That helpful person changed my trajectory in life, and I’m eternally thankful.
