EU Could Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Official States

The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the United States against five European individuals working on fighting online hate and disinformation, an EU official stated.

European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders including Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans were placed on individuals who have been at the heart of efforts to enact laws governing American tech companies.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in criticizing the decision.

The bans were imposed this week against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

The DSA is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities contend the rules are essential to combat hate speech and disinformation.

This disagreement threatens to become a facet of a far wider existing political and ideological clash involving the current US administration and Europe.

Additional Updates Reported Today

In other legal developments:

  • A US district judge has blocked efforts to cut security grants to local governments that do not comply with certain immigration enforcement policies. The official ruled the case was “a further instance” of linking federal aid to adherence to directives.
  • Authorization was issued for the deployment of 350 national guard members to a major US city ahead of the holiday period, alongside an active immigration enforcement operation.
  • A Pacific Island nation will consent to accept a limited number of individuals from the US in exchange for additional aid, after concluding a memorandum of understanding with US authorities.

Additionally, a Democratic lawmaker has filed a lawsuit seeking the stripping of a political figure’s name from a prominent cultural institution in Washington DC.

Experts have also noted that recent statements regarding foreign petroleum resources align with a broader belief in certain circles of “economic expansionism”, leading to parallels with historical international strategies.
