Individuals Coming Off Slimming Jabs Gain Back Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to Dieters

Obesity treatment involves long-term strategies.

A recent study reveals that patients who discontinue popular weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt conventional diet and exercise regimens.

Findings released in a prominent medical journal demonstrates that while overweight individuals frequently drop about a fifth of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"Individuals buying these treatments need to be aware of the potential of fast rebound weight gain when the therapy is stopped," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain means a return to pre-treatment weight within about 18 months.

Analyzing Therapies

The research, which examined 37 of studies involving thousands of participants, compared the results of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.

The team point out that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone generally have a more gradual creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

Explaining the Rapid Regain

Nutrition scientists propose the mechanism of the drugs is key to understanding the accelerated weight return.

GLP-1 drugs copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates hunger.

"Artificially providing the hormone levels far above than the body's typical production may cause the system to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and could reduce sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Stopping of this hormone supplement means hunger is unsuppressed, making overeating much more probable."

An Ongoing Issue?

The NHS suggest the jabs for people with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians say that, considering the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy should be considered life-long.

This perspective is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "underscore the persistent nature of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

User Accounts

Users who have discontinued the medication describe a sudden resurgence of cravings.

"It was like a trigger activating and you're instantly ravenous," described a patient.

This difficulty is compounded if individuals have not developed sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Widespread Adoption

Survey data indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest being substantial.

  • Adoption is greater among women compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest level of interest.
  • A large proportion access the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Ultimately, experts stress that while the jabs are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone fix and lasting health benefits hinges on ongoing behavioural changes.
