Social Media Influencers Fueling Parallel Market for Unapproved Weight-Loss Medication

A shadow economy for unlicensed weight-loss drugs is being driven by TikTok fitness influencers and sellers on communication apps, according to recent findings.

Investigational Treatment Acquiring Traction Via Social Media

The experimental drug, which remains in clinical trials, is being promoted by online personalities for its supposed fat-burning effects. Followers are urged to contact these accounts privately for source information, while also receiving discount codes.

Active Commerce on Messaging Platforms

Separately, a robust trade exists on Telegram, where groups with thousands of participants share “before and after” images, injection guides and claims of rapid UK delivery. Sellers market the substance there before redirecting customers to WhatsApp for purchases.

Understanding Retatrutide

Retatrutide is an investigational injectable created by American pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly. The treatment targets three intestinal hormones – glucagon-like peptide-1, glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide and glucagon. Early trials suggest it could help patients lose up to a quarter of their body weight. Referred to as the “triple G”, the drug is being promoted online as the successor to Ozempic.

Healthcare Professionals Voice Concerns

However, doctors and chemists have cautions that the sale of what is still an unlicensed medication in the UK is a cause for concern and could result in individuals administering products of uncertain source.

Several experts said the demand for the experimental drug could be connected to the rising cost of approved weight loss treatments such as Mounjaro.

Legal Status and Implementation

Selling retatrutide on social media or Telegram is prohibited in the UK, as it is an unlicensed medication that cannot be marketed or supplied for human use under the Human Medicines Regulations 2012.

Several content creators try to circumvent the rules by calling to the drug as a “research chemical” or citing it as “not for human consumption”. Retatrutide is not a controlled substance, but promotion and supply can still violate medicines, advertising, and customer regulations, risking fines, legal action or prison.

Service Reaction and Material Removal

According to the social media company, the service has removed violative content and prohibited related keywords and query recommendations. The company stated it was dedicated to maintaining the service secure and investing in enhancing enforcement strategies.

Digital Marketplace Operations

Investigations also found communities with up to 9,000 participants marketing retatrutide using Telegram's integrated search feature, which functions like a public directory. Entering “retatrutide” immediately brings up groups with numerous of users, filled with images of weight loss, positive testimonials and step-by-step guides for preparing or administering at home.

Within moments of entering one group, a seller shared WhatsApp details, where most purchases take place. The vendor provided an instruction manual and guaranteed shipping within two days. When asked whether the product was authentic, one vendor said: “You can’t be sure.” Another shared a image of a alleged testing documentation. Not one inquired about body mass, health issues or past usage.

Product Details and Costs

Inside these communities, messages show black plastic parcels with postal service stickers, stating to include new batches. One communication stated: “It took eight of us to load them this morning.”

Buyers can choose between dry substance containers, prepared at residence with sterile water, or pre-filled injectors typically sold at £160 for 20mg. When questioned how much time a pen should be used, sellers give contradictory responses varying between a several days to “depends on your body”.

Service Oversight and Safety Actions

A spokesperson for the messaging service said it regularly moderated dangerous material on its platform including content that promoted the “misuse of controlled medications”. The organization noted that it removed “millions of pieces of harmful content each day”.

Medical Professional Warnings

“People are injecting substances they cannot confirm. Although the science behind retatrutide is sound, these digital products may not contain what they claim,” stated a pharmacy expert, the head of pharmaceutical services at Chemist4U.

A medical professional of Asda Online Doctor connected the surge in demand to recent price rises for authorized weight-loss medications such as Mounjaro. “With costs increasing, patients are using social media. But counterfeit treatments are highly dangerous. You can’t be certain what’s contained or whether the environment they were made in was clean,” she explained.

Her team has previously seen individuals harmed by self-injection from unconfirmed sources. “We understand the frustration, but buying from messaging apps or communication platforms is taking chances with your health,” said Wyllie. “These materials could be contaminated or incorrectly dosed.”

Manufacturer Position

A spokesperson from the pharmaceutical company stated the substance was in third stage research studies and had not been reviewed or authorized by any regulatory agency globally. “Consequently at this time no one can sell [it] for human use,” they explained, noting that any item “falsely representing itself as a company investigational product not yet approved … may expose patients to potentially serious health risks”.
