Trump's Progressive Warning Overlooks The Continent's True Threat: Technological Stagnation.

Donald Trump's security policy document offers a misguided assessment of Europe. It claims that open-border policies and what it terms "woke" agendas represent an existential risk to the continent's identity. Yet, this perspective is based on a fundamental misreading of the reality. The actual danger facing the EU is not cultural but technological and economic lag.

A Glaring Growth Gap Between Europe and the US

The data paint a stark picture. Between 2008 and 2023, American economic output surged by 87%, compared to a paltry thirteen and a half percent growth for the European Union. During this period, EU GDP per capita fell from over three-quarters to just 50% of the US level. Strikingly, even Mississippi now boasts a greater average income than major European economies like Italy and France.

Today, roughly 50% of the global top fifty technology firms are US-based, while only four are European.

The Technological Deficit: The Core Problem

The growing disparity is driven by stronger efficiency gains in the United States, fueled by breakthroughs and better use of resources. The landscape of global tech dominance is decidedly US-centric. Over the past fifty years, hundreds of American startups have scaled into companies valued at more than ten billion dollars, versus just 14 in Europe.

This disparity prompts a pressing question: In the race for tomorrow's sectors like semiconductors, AI, and quantum computing, what is Europe stand? Most analysts concede it is largely a contest between two between the United States and China, with Europe starting at a clear handicap.

Root Causes of the Continent's Innovation Gap

Several major reasons explain this technological divide.

  • Venture Capital: The US boasts a much more robust and agile system for financing new ventures. The EU still lacks a true capital markets union, which limits the growth potential of emerging companies.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Excessive and fragmented regulation hinder Europe. A US startup can launch a service under one set of laws to access a market of hundreds of millions. The European Union, despite a larger population, is divided among twenty-seven separate regimes, creating significant internal barriers.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Attitudes toward risk-taking differ sharply. In parts of Europe, business failure was historically viewed with penalties, whereas in the US, it is often seen as a badge of experience.
  • Defense Spending: The United States enjoys a tightly woven innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. Europe's long-term lack of spending in military capabilities has weakened its ability in breakthrough innovation.

The Road Ahead: Reasons for Hopefulness

In spite of these hurdles, one can find causes for hope. Policymakers are increasingly aware of the severe threat and have started to advance substantial change. Notable analyses on European competitiveness and the internal market point to the necessity of sweeping changes.

Given appropriate incentives and regulatory reforms, these assets might enable much higher levels of business-led breakthroughs.

Europe retains significant advantages: high-quality workforce, excellent education systems, and premier labs. Coupled with a large internal market and substantial household savings, these elements have the potential to unleash a surge of investment and entrepreneurship.

Importantly, even if Europe does not take the lead in creating next-generation tech, it can still significantly increase productivity by adopting and adapting advancements from other regions.

A Critical Juncture

Europe now faces a critical moment. To paraphrase a famous line, economic erosion often happens "gradually and then suddenly". To date, the continent's technological decline has been steady. But, without decisive action to address its structural weaknesses, today's gradual weakening could turn into a sudden and irreversible loss of global economic relevance.
