Wimbledon Embraces Video Replay Technology for the First Time.

The Championships tennis court with video review system

Wimbledon will follow the US and Australian Opens in implementing replay technology.

Video review systems are set to arrive at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Competitors are granted the option to question specific calls made by the official, echoing the protocol already in use at both the US Open and the Australian Open.

This innovation will be operational on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles matches.

This step comes just a year after the All England Club implemented electronic line calling, which effectively ended the 147-year tradition of line officials.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Competitors cannot to dispute the call of the ELC system, but they can request the official to review other decisions, such as:

  • If a ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a shot touched an rival's racket or body on the way past.
  • Potential hindrance end of a point.

Importantly, there is no limit on the number of challenges a player can initiate.

A Recent Example

A recent incident occurred in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against his opponent.

Draper admitted it was a tough situation for the official, but believed his opponent had "used the regulations effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a video and determined the player was responsible for hindrance, awarding the point to Medvedev.

Growing Trend

This technology aren't exclusive to major tournaments. It was adopted at the US Open for two years and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have the system implemented at all of its events.

Additional Innovations

Another change at The Championships 2025 involves the addition of graphical cues on displays to support the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This solves instances where spectators have sometimes been unsure if a shot was out or in.

In other news, with exactly a century of days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have further announced an increase in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
